Cunerty Elected to Board of Governors
Posted on April 17th, 2009 No commentsBill Cunerty, a member of Victoria Club and Mission Viejo Country Club, was elected to the California Seniors’ Golf Association Board of Governors at its spring meeting.
The 62-year-old retired in 2007 from coaching and teaching at Saddleback College. Cunerty was head coach of the men’s golf team from 1980-2007. During his time at Saddleback, Cunerty also served as the women’s golf coach and as assistant football coach from 1980-1994, prior to becoming the head football coach in 1995 for three seasons. As head football coach, Cunerty led the Gauchos to a perfect 11-0 record in 1996 and a national championship. Cunerty’s golf coaching career was just as illustrious, leading the men’s team to a record of 506-47 in his 26 years while the women enjoyed a 94-7 record during his nine-year tenure. During his time as men’s and women’s golf coach Saddleback produced seven state titles, 30 conference titles and five conference runner-up finishes.
Cunerty brings a long resume of service on golf boards and committees. He has volunteered for the following organizations and clubs: Southern California Golf Association (SCGA), SCGA Foundation, GCMI (the Board that oversees the SCGA Golf Course), California Golf Association (CGA), Victoria Club and Mission Viejo Country Club. While serving these organizations and clubs Bill has held a variety of roles including President of both SCGA and CGA in 2005 and 2006 respectively.
The Mission Viejo resident is a graduate of the University of Southern California where he earned a BA in Journalism and MA in English. While at USC, Cunerty was a member of the baseball and football teams as well as the golf team for a season. In addition, Cunerty played quarterback on the 1967 national championship team. Outside of golf, Cunerty’s hobbies include windsurfing, broadcasting local high school games, going to the movies with wife Claudia and spending time with his granddaughters. Bill and Claudia have two daughters: Kelly and Shannon.
